Introduction to American Mah Jongg
Mah jongg is having a moment! It’s not just your grandma’s game anymore—Savannah Guthrie and Jenna Bush Hager learned to play on the Today Show, Julia Roberts hosts a weekly game, and Kelly Ripa, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Meghan Markle are all fans. Curious about this uniquely American game that blends tradition, strategy, and laughter, played with 152 tiles marked with Chinese characters and symbols?

In this one-night session, you’ll get an overview of American mah jongg’s history, terminology, and rules of play, along with an introduction to the National Mah Jongg League card (no need to purchase one beforehand). The format will be lecture-style with demonstration and Q&A. Please note: you will not be playing during this session, nor will you leave ready to play on your own.

The goal is to give you enough background to decide whether to invest in a card and take the next steps toward learning the game. We’ll also gauge interest in a multi-week, hands-on beginner class with small group instruction and guided play, with the ultimate aim of creating a fun, welcoming community for open play and connection.

Absolutely no mah jongg experience or knowledge is required, and you do not need to bring anything with you.

This one night session is free, but participants must register before the event.

This program will take place at the Colleen's Ice Cream & Sandwich Shop, located at 61 High Street, in Medford Square.
